Google Maps can tell you more than just how to get around in Palm Coast. The satellite view of Palm Coast led the men’s and momen’s rowing teams from Syracuse University to our water-filled city.

“We found Palm Coast by looking for places with good water on the (Intracoastal) from the satellite view from Google Maps,” women’s coach Alicea Kockis said via e-mail. “Then we started investigating the area to find that it had everything we needed for our group of 70-plus athletes and coaches: perfect accommodation, catering right down the road, a place to launch the boats right next door, and a grocery store across the street.

It really all just fell into place.”

The group practiced on the Intracoastal three times a day while visiting, using Rhodes Marine as a launch point.

“We take training trips at the end of winter break and over spring break,” Kochis said. “ …These intensive weeks really set us up for success for our racing season which takes place April to June — especially since the thaw in Syracuse comes a bit later than some of our competition.”

Kochis said both teams had a great week of training, and there is a good chance they will return next year.
