Jane Allen, who loved working with animals and volunteered at the Flagler Humane Society, died Saturday, April 16, in what officials are calling an apparent suicide at the Hammock Dunes Bridge. She was 50.

“I just lost my daughter. There’s no pain worse,” said her mother, Judie Allen, who lives in the E-Section. “I thought it was bad when I lost my mom and my dad. Nothing compares to my daughter dying. That’s not how it’s supposed to be — that’s not the order of things.”

Jane Allen was a warm and caring daughter, sister and friend, Judie Allen said.

One memory she has of her daughter is when they were together on Flagler Beach when Jane was about 30. Jane saw a man mistreating children, and she chased after the man to protect the children.

She had no fear, Judie Allen said.

“She was the kind who would want to bring the street-man home and feed him,” Judie Allen added. “She was a very warmhearted and caring person.”

She said Jane struggled with bipolar disorder and alcoholism for years.

“I think it got too much for her,” she said.

“ … But I have faith and I think I can get though it. I must. I have another daughter, who lives in Kentucky.”

Memorial services are 2 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Palm Coast Bible Church. Donations may be made in her name to the Flagler Humane Society.
