Guns in the park

4:40 p.m. — 2000 block of North Beach Street, Ormond Beach

Culpable negligence, exposure to harm. A 22-year-old Jacksonville man was taken into ICE custody after he and a 24-year-old man were suspected of firing a BB gun in a negligent manner.

Police report that a family was fishing at a local state park when they heard a "loud explosive noise" before seeing a BB fly past their heads. When one of the family members confronted the group who fired the gun, the incident report states, the men were not pointing it at them or threatening them.

Officers then spoke with the two men and their family members. While neither spoke English, a family member was able to translate. The men denied shooting at anything and initially claimed not to have a BB gun in their possession. The BB gun was later found hidden in a storage space inside one of their relatives' car.

The men told police that they were starting a bonfire and minding their own business when the family member approached them and started an argument, shouting at them for being immigrants. Police noted they were given several opportunities to admit "having made an honest mistake in not realizing people were near the direction they were shooting."

The 24-year-old man was the only one seen by the victim to be holding a BB gun. Police didn't charge the 22-year-old, who was taken into custody under an ICE detainer. The 22-year-old was released on the scene but faces misdemeanor charges.

Slime crime

8:30 p.m. — 200 block of North Nova Road, Ormond Beach

Criminal mischief. A grocery store is pressing charges after two juvenile girls damaged almost $500 worth of merchandise.

According to a police report, the juveniles were seen on surveillance footage opening products like glue, shampoo, shaving cream, petroleum jelly and hair oil before taking them to the store's baby aisle and spreading them all over the shelves. The pair were in the store for about a half hour before an adult told them something, at which point they left the store.

They only paid for items not used in the incident: heavy whipping cream, half and half creamer, and three deli items.

Two days later, the store manager recognized one of the juveniles — a 9-year-old Ormond Beach girl, who returned to the store with her grandmother.

The girl told police that she and her friend had been trying to make slime, and that they tried to clean it up, but failed and left the store. The store manager told police the girls had been involved in a similar incident on March 15, resulting in $136 worth of damaged merchandise.

The girl was trespassed from the store and officers are working to make contact with the second girl.
