Palm Coast resident Steve Morgan, owner of Alcatraz Brewing, has announced his campaign for the U.S. House of Representative's sixth congressional district in Florida.
The seat is currently held by Rep. Randy Fine, who won it in a special election. This is Morgan's first campaign for an elected office and he is running as a fiscally conservative Democrat, according to a campaign press release.
With a campaign slogan of "Change is Brewing," Morgan is building a coalition of Independents, Republicans and Democrats to unite a district that has often been divided.
“All are welcome under this tent, regardless of party, gender, race, religion, or personal preferences” Morgan said in his campaign announcement. “We have become too divisive and too partisan. It’s time to come together to make our District as great as the beautiful land and fascinating people who live here.”
Morgan is campaigning on a 'Raising the B.A.R.' platform, the press release said: a balanced budget, affordability increases and respect. Morgan, referencing the national debt, said the country should "throw away the 'credit card' and start paying down what" it owes.
Morgan intends to support several proposals to help with affordability, including health care subsidies, Medicare spending and SNAP benefit, the press release said. Unnecessary tariffs, he said, will only increase prices and contribute to the growing inflaction.
Morgan also supports higher tax rates for corporations, which are now taxed at historically low rates, the press release said. Another key part of the campaign is respect, the press release said: as individuals and a society everyone should show more respect to those who work for the community, Morgan said.
“My father used to say that if you respect the people that you work and associate with, they will show more respect to the people in their lives and those they encounter," Morgan said. "As a result, the benefit of being treated with respect is magnified and keeps passing forward.”
The primary election is set for Aug. 18 and the general election for Tuesday, Nov. 3. More information about Morgan's campaign can be found at www.MorganforCongress.us
