St. Mark By the Sea Lutheran Church in Palm Coast recently sent a mission team to volunteer at Give Kids the World Village, an 89-acre nonprofit resort for critically ill children located in Kissimmee.
The mission team — composed of team leader Sherri Hunter, Darla and Rick Allison, Donna Calvani Theresa Pisano and Kay Schlegal — volunteered from Feb. 2-6. Over the past 11 years, the church has sent nine mission teams to volunteer for five-day periods, according to a press release.
Families at Give Kids the World spend a week at the storybook-themed resort while visiting Orlando attractions and theme parks, at no-cost to the families. It was founded in 1986 and has welcomed more than 200,000 families from all 50 states and 77 countries.

Keila Brouse, a graduate of Matanzas High School, opened her mission call in front of family and friends on March 6, a tradition among members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Brouse committed to serve a mission for 18 months but didn’t learn where in the world she would be assigned until reading her letter. Her mission assignment is Maceio, Brazil, a beach city of 1 million, and she will begin Portuguese training in June.

Her father, mother and older sister — Eddie, Christina and Abbie — have also served missions for the church, all at their own expense.
“I can’t wait to meet the people,” Keila Brouse said. “I have already been praying for them. And I’m excited for the tropics — to see all the plants and trees.”
