Seabreeze won the Five Star Conference boys tennis championship on Friday, March 6, at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach. All five Seabreeze singles players reached the finals with the Sandcrabs winning three singles titles and one doubles title.
Winning singles championships for Seabreeze were Tej Patel at No. 3 (6-2, 6-2 over Spruce Creek’s Aarav Desai in the final); Jordan Anthony at No. 4 (6-0, 3-6, 10-7 over Creek’s Aiden Cappiello in the final); and Benjamin Upchurch at No. 5 (6-0, 6-1 over Creek’s Brayden Kim in the final). Patel and Anthony won No. 2 doubles over Creek’s Desai and Kim, 6-4, 6-2.
The Sandcrabs’ Jeffrey Martin at No. 1 and Hunter Shuler at No. 2 also reached the singles finals. The Sandcrabs entered the tournament with a 4-1 record with their only loss coming to Spruce Creek, 4-3.
Patel and Anthony are both undefeated in singles. Patel is 7-0 at No. 3 singles and 1-0 at No. 1. Anthony is 4-0 at No. 4 singles. Shuler is 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Kai Campbell is 4-1 at No. 5 singles.
In the Five Star girls tournament, Flagler Palm Coast placed second behind Spruce Creek, while Seabreze was fourth. FPC’s Tatiana Leontyeva (No. 1) and Aasi Bharucha (No. 3) and Seabreeze’s Karma Candelaria (No. 2) and Habiba Nadim (No. 5) reached the singles finals.

Former Matanzas and Flagler Palm Coast wrestlers Mariah Mills and Christina Borgmann competed at the inaugural NCAA Women’s Wrestling Championships on March 6-7 in Coralville, Iowa. Mills, a freshman at West Liberty University, won two matches and placed among the top 12 in the 124-pound weight class. Borgmann, a freshman at Felician University, placed among the top 18 in the 131-pound weight class.
Matanzas won the boys title at the Deltona Wolves Showcase track and field meet on March 7 with Blaine Vogel winning the 800-meter run in 2:08.14 and the 1,600-meter run in 4:33.38. The 4x400 relay of Matt Ciardi, Kevin Gilpin, Jayden McCoy and Jez McCoy won with a time of 3:41.57. On the girls’ side, Megan Rhee won the 1,600 meters in 5:51.88. Rena Carlton won the 200 in 2:46.98.
FPC won three events at the Bolles Bulldog Classic on March 6: Grace Taylor won the girls javelin with a new school record of 117 feet, 5 inches. La’Darius Simmons won boys javelin with a throw of 167 feet, 9 inches. And Karina Marcelus won the 100 hurdles in 14.66 seconds. Jordan Haymon placed second in the boys 200 with a PR time of 21.70 seconds.
At the George Janan Spruce Creek Invitational on March 7, Seabreeze’s Drayton Bracket won the 110 hurdles in 16.09. Dominic Dowell won the 400 hurdles in 59.98 seconds. Mainland’s Sydney Noelien placed second in girls discus with a throw of 161 feet, 1 inch. Father Lopez’s Lauren Lancing placed second in both the 100 meters (12.48) and the 100 hurdles (15.43) setting school records in both events.
Flagler Palm Coast won the Olympic competition at the King of the Platform boys weightlifting tournament on March 6 in Leesburg. Five FPC lifters won Olympic titles: Anthony Giacobbe (119 pounds), Cody Strawser (129), Alex Huynh (139), Jackson Fedun (164) and Matthew McFall (unlimited).
