Marion Clayton’s two-run homer gave Flagler Palm Coast a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning against Jacksonville Providence. But the Stallions scored six unearned runs in the sixth to defeat FPC 10-6 on Thursday, March 5, at the Bulldogs’ field.
It was the third loss in three days for the Bulldogs, who started the season with five consecutive wins. It was the second straight game in which FPC gave up six runs in an inning.
“[Pitcher Jordan Gonzalez] started the game off well and gave us a chance to win,” FPC coach Kyle Marsh said. “But at the end of the day, we got to play all seven innings. Right now, we are not playing all seven innings. And it's showing.”
The Bulldogs rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie the score with two runs in the third inning on Gonzalez's two-run double and one in the fourth. Gonzalez left the mound after five innings with the Bulldogs ahead. But errors kept the Providence sixth inning alive as the Stallions sent 10 batters to the plate against Nole Hammerle.
FPC reliever Brody Youngman struck out the side in the seventh after allowing a leadoff single to Brody Kraft. Kraft was left stranded on third after stealing second and advancing on a wild pitch. But Providence pitcher Jaxson Strough, who entered the game after Clayton’s homer with no outs in the fifth, shut the door on the Bulldogs with three no-hit innings.
Clayton’s homer was FPC’s first of the season. He drove in Hemmerle who led off the fifth with a single.
“Marion got a good piece of it, a good swing,” Marsh said. “The pitching was good. We had opportunities. We just didn’t capitalize. We just got to get back to it.”
FPC’s three losses came to teams with a combined 25-6 record as of March 5. Spruce Creek (9-1) defeated the Bulldogs 6-4 on March 3 with FPC scoring all four of its runs in the bottom of the seventh. Host West Orange (8-3) knocked out 13 hits in an 11-1 five-inning victory on March 4. Providence improved to 8-2 with the 10-6 victory.
The Bulldogs will try to get back on the winning track with a home game against Christ’s Church Academy of Jacksonville on Monday, March 9, at 7 p.m.
