The Heiser Foundation has donated $4,000 to support the creation of a Gold Star Families memorial planned for installation at Heroes Memorial Park in Palm Coast.
The donation, announced by Tom Heiser, president of the foundation, will help fund the memorial, which awaits final approval for placement in the park.
The Florida Gold Star Families organization provides honor, hope and healing to families who have lost loved ones in active-duty service with the U.S. Armed Forces. It offers free programs, services, and community support to survivors, regardless of the era or circumstances of the military death.
Founded in 2000 by the late Fran and Gary Heiser of Palm Coast, the Heiser Foundation memorializes their son, Master Sgt. Michael G. Heiser, who was killed in the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia. As a nonprofit, the foundation provides economic assistance and support to individuals and organizations facing tragic losses, with a special focus on military-connected families. It also awards scholarships, including to ROTC students in Flagler County, and honors legacies through memorials and community aid.
The push for the Gold Star Families memorial in Heroes Memorial Park is led by Jeff Kingdon, chairman of the Flagler County Veterans Advisory Council, and Larry Rekart, a council delegate. Cathy Heighter of Florida Gold Star Families has also played a key role in advancing the project.
The memorial aims to pay lasting tribute to Gold Star Families in the local community, where Heroes Memorial Park already hosts ceremonies honoring fallen service members and their loved ones.
