Drivers traveling through Bunnell will soon see a change at the intersection of U.S. 1 and County Road 13, where a new traffic signal has been installed to improve safety and traffic flow.
The Florida Department of Transportation recently completed installation of the signal, which is currently operating in flash mode while motorists adjust to the new traffic pattern. Officials say the signal is expected to become fully operational within about two weeks.
During the flash phase, drivers should approach the intersection carefully, yield to vehicles already in the intersection and remain alert for pedestrians and bicyclists.
County officials say the signal will be especially helpful for traffic heading to the Flagler County Fairgrounds, which hosts several large events throughout the year.
County Administrator Heidi Petito said the improvement should make it easier for residents and visitors to access the fairgrounds during events such as the Flagler County Fair and Youth Show and the rodeos held there each year. The intersection also serves residents attending programs offered by the UF/IFAS Extension office nearby.
The new signal is part of a broader Florida Department of Transportation project focused on safety improvements along nearly six miles of U.S. 1 that runs through Palm Coast and Bunnell.
That project is expected to be completed in early 2026, depending on weather and other conditions.
