BUNNELL, Fla. — The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office arrested an Ormond Beach man Thursday night following a domestic disturbance during which the suspect pulled a knife on deputies inside the home, resulting in one deputy being cut with the knife during the struggle.
At approximately 8:58 p.m. on Feb. 27, deputies responded to an Ormond Beach residence after receiving a report that a woman and her elderly mother had been locked out of the home by Andrew Mark Williams, 36, of Ormond Beach, who was inside the home and reportedly intoxicated. The 90-year-old homeowner was distraught and worried about her 91-year-old husband who was also inside the home and suffers from dementia.
Deputies entered the residence to check on the elderly man’s welfare and restore access to the home. Once inside, deputies located Williams lying on the kitchen floor. He immediately stood up and became argumentative and increasingly aggressive toward deputies.
As Williams backed away from deputies toward the kitchen counter, he armed himself with a paring knife he retrieved from the knife block and concealed in his hand. While deputies attempted to secure Williams, a struggle ensued and Williams cut one of the deputies on the palm of his left hand with the knife. Deputies gave multiple commands for Williams to drop the knife and that if he didn't, a Taser would be used.
When Williams did not comply, a TASER was used and Williams fell to the ground and dropped the knife; however, he continued to resist deputies’ efforts to place him in handcuffs. Following a second TASER deployment, Williams complied and deputies secured him.
“Our deputies displayed extreme restraint in dealing with this violent and armed drunk," said Sheriff Rick Staly. “Our deputies exercised sound, professional judgment by deploying a TASER to stop the threat and bring this incident to a conclusion, but the reality is this could have ended much differently. This guy was a slow learner but after two zaps with a Taser, he finally came to his senses and quit resisting. I commend our deputies for using less-lethal weapons when legally they could have used deadly force. This is exactly why we train extensively in de-escalation tactics. If you threaten deputies with a weapon, you will lose and end up at the Green Roof Inn. Fortunately, our deputy was not seriously injured and was able to go home to his family last night.”
The deputy was treated for the cut to his hand by EMS at the scene. The suspect refused medical treatment but was transported to AdventHealth Palm Coast South for medical clearance.
Deputies arrested Williams for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, three counts of obstruction with violence and elder abuse. After Williams was medically cleared from the hospital, deputies transported him to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where he is being held without bond.
