Rami Amiri didn’t know how much time remained for his chance to score for the third time in the game, but he knew time was running out.
He completed his hat trick with 2.7 seconds left as Flagler Palm Coast defeated Seabreeze 5-1 on Friday, Jan. 9, in a Five Star Conference boys soccer tournament consolation game at FPC’s Sal Campanella Stadium.
It was the senior midfielder’s second hat trick of his high school career. His first came in an 8-0 victory against Deltona last season. With the game decided, the only order of business left for the Bulldogs was to give Amiri a chance to score one more time.
“I didn't even know how much time was on the clock. I just knew I had to hit it,” said Amiri, who leads the Bulldogs with 17 goals. “I just went up the field, hoping I can get a last touch. My teammates just shielded the ball for me, and I got a last hit on it and it went in. And what a game from all of us, to be honest. It was a great game.”
The Bulldogs finished fifth in the tournament with the victory and improved to 12-6 with two games to play before the district tournament. They visit rival Matanzas (12-4-1) on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 7:30 p.m., and then host DeLand on Friday, Jan. 16.
Amiri’s first goal was on a penalty kick. On his second goal, at the 23-minute mark, he went around two players and booted it in top right.
“I'm happy for him,” FPC coach Ramtin Amiri said of his younger brother. “But overall, I'm really happy for the whole team. That was, in my opinion, the best performance we put out all season, and to do that against a rival in Seabreeze was even better.”
Seabreeze finished sixth in the tournament. The Sandcrabs, who continue to have injury issues, fell to 4-7-4. They finish the regular season with road games against Tocoi Creek (Jan. 12) and DeLand (Jan. 14) and their Senior Night game at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex at 7 p.m. on Jan. 16 against University.
“We have three players who were hurt and tried to come back and one of them hurt his ankle during the game, probably a fracture,” Seabreeze coach Alex Perez said. “The boys tried to do the best they can, but FPC has very good talent. They dominated the whole game. It wasn’t our night. Hopefully we can get strong enough, and some boys healthy for the districts. We’ll see if we can make something good happen.”
Both teams lost their first-round Five Star games, with FPC falling to DeLand 3-0 and New Smyrna Beach shutting out Seabreeze 5-0, but they each won on Jan. 7 — FPC defeating Atlantic 6-2 and Seabreeze topping Pine Ridge 5-1 — to advance to the fifth-place game.
“I'm glad we found that energy,” Ramtin Amiri said. “It's good that we’ve discovered that we can do that this late into the season, because this is when you're going to need that energy. If they can play with that intensity and that energy going forward, we can do some big things.”
