To ensure residents and visitors stay safe this Super Bowl weekend, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is increasing patrols on our roadways, in residential neighborhoods, and near area businesses and reminding visitors and residents not to drink and drive.

As the most watched sporting event of the year in the United States, Super Bowl Sunday is expected to bring with it congested roadways and large crowds at area businesses and restaurants as well as the potential for crimes of opportunity. In preparation, Sheriff Rick Staly asks everyone to exercise patience and use caution when out in public or traveling on our roadways.

“Don’t become a target for criminals this weekend. Always lock your car doors and never leave valuables in plain view. Store them out of sight in your trunk until you reach your destination,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “Emotions will be running high for fans of both the winning and losing teams after the big game, so slow down, use extra caution, and keep your eyes on the road. Don’t drive distracted. It can wait.”

In addition to increased patrols, FCSO will have dedicated DUI enforcement to deter impaired and aggressive driving and to prevent crashes.

“Alcohol tends to flow quite freely during large sporting events and with it an increased risk of poor decisions that lead to DUIs, traffic crashes, and fatalities. If you choose to drink and get behind the wheel, it could have life-altering consequences,” Sheriff Staly added. “If you plan to drink, don’t drive. Plan ahead and have a designated driver or use a rideshare service; otherwise, you’ll be seeing new bars at the Green Roof Inn.”

In addition to increased visibility by deputies, FCSO will also have displays across the county to educate residents on the consequences of driving impaired. This includes the FCSO “Taxi-Patrol” car, which will be parked along State Road 100 in Palm Coast as a reminder that driving drunk can lead to an expensive one-way ticket to the county jail, as well as message boards on multiple roadways with the reminder to “Arrive Alive.”
