Tomoka Elementary, Spruce Creek High teachers are FUTURES Foundation's First Year Teacher Award winners

Tomoka Elementary second grade teacher Emily Eaton won the Elementary First Year Teacher Award; Spruce Creek High School chemistry teacher John Renfro won the Secondary First Year Teacher Award.

The FUTURES Foundation for Volusia County Schools recognized its First Year Teacher award winners during a ceremony at Mainland High School on Tuesday, April 28.

Tomoka Elementary second grade teacher Emily Eaton received the Elementary First Year Teacher Award.

"Ms. Eaton is a wonderful addition to the Tomoka Family," Tomoka Elementary stated on its school Facebook page. "She has positively impacted our school her first year teaching. Her positive outlook and infectious enthusiasm brightens our campus. We are proud of you Ms. Eaton!"

Spruce Creek High School chemistry teacher John Renfro received the Secondary First Year Teacher Award.

"Principal Dr. Todd Sparger said Mr. Renfro's ability to analyze student misconceptions and adjust instruction accordingly is a hallmark of an effective teacher and something he demonstrates consistently," Volusia County Schools stated in a Facebook post.

The FUTURES Foundation will announce its Principal of the Year award winner next month. The nominees are:

  • Tracy Ryser of Woodward Avenue Elementary
  • Dr. Anthony Serianni of Volusia Online Learning
  • Artherly Sands of Richard Milburn Academy
  • Shannon Young of George Marks Elementary
  • Dr. Eidie Velez of Galaxy Middle School 
  • Michael Degirolmo of DeLand High School
  • Melissa Marple of Chisholm Elementary
  • Carrie Devaney of Pride Elementary School
