More than 1,000 Bethune-Cookman University students, faculty, staff and alumni took part in a Day of Service initiative on Monday, April 13, in honor of the inauguration of Bethune-Cookman University's new president, Albert Mosley.
The volunteers lent support to dozens of local nonprofits across Volusia County, including Food Brings Hope and the Emory L. Bennett Veterans' Nursing Home, according to the university. B-CU volunteers also helped pack food bags and restock the food pantry at Campbell Middle School in Daytona Beach for the Children's Home Society.
Mosley visited these sites, helped clean the area around Rose Avenue in Daytona and also spoke to students at Mainland High School, according to BC-U.
According to a press release, the Inauguration Day of Service "complements the university’s ‘B-CU Rising: All of Us, All In’ campaign — an initiative focused on raising $1 million for student scholarships — by reinforcing Bethune-Cookman’s belief that service and access to education remain inseparable."
Volunteers gathered at Daisy Stockton park before and after the service day, which concluded with a cookout.
Following the Day of Service, B-CU held its Inauguration Scholarship Gala, where its $1 million scholarship fundraising goal was exceeded.
Mosley was officially inaugurated as the eighth president of B-CU during a ceremony on Tuesday, April 14.
