Aggravated assault. Police arrested a 28-year-old Daytona Beach man who threatened his uncle with a machete over apartment keys.
A witness to the altercation called police, and when officers arrived at the scene, the verbal altercation was still going on, according to a police report. When speaking to the nephew, the reporting officer noticed a black handle peeking out from his backpack. The nephew told police that the argument began after he was dropped off by a friend to grab the keys to an apartment, at which point his uncle became aggressive.
The nephew said that, while he did pull out the machete from his backpack, he never unsheathed it. After this, he said his uncle retrieved a firearm from his car, and then they both went inside the apartment, where the argument continued.
The uncle told a different story. He said his nephew walked up and demanded the keys to the apartment as he was changing the lightbulbs for his car's headlights. When he requested he wait until he was done, his nephew went "nuts" and pulled out the machete. The uncle did grab a firearm, but said he did so out of fear.
A witness corroborated the uncle's story, saying she overheard the nephew state he was going to cut his uncle into pieces.
The nephew was taken to jail.
3:19 p.m. — First block of Cardinal Drive, Ormond Beach
Grand theft. An officer returned to the home of a 70-year-old Ormond Beach man after another one of his vehicles was stolen. Police had recently spoken with him after his truck was stolen, and the culprit behind that theft was arrested two days prior.
The man's daughter told police that since moving to Florida last September, he had been spending all of his money, drinking and "inviting undesirable people" into his home, who have stolen from him, according to the incident report.
When police approached, the man told them that a 31-year-old man (who had been staying with him for the last two weeks) stole his motorcycle. He has a history of vehicle thefts, grand theft, narcotics use, and fleeing and eluding, and was out on bond for a previous theft.
The Ormond Beach man wished to press charges.
