The Matanzas boys tennis team rested two of its top players in its final match of the season. Without them, the Pirates still completed a perfect 15-0 season with a 5-2 victory against St. Augustine on Thursday, April 9, at the Matanzas courts.
“It feels great to be undefeated,” said Owen Brady, one of five seniors on the team. “This is the first time we've done that in my four years. We came close my freshman year — we lost one match. But this year we had a really strong season, and we closed it out.
The Matanzas girls lost their final regular-season match to a strong St. Augustine team, 5-2. The St. Augustine girls finished the season with a 13-2 record, while Matanzas finished at 10-6.
The Pirates will host the District 4-3A boys and girls tournaments on April 14-15 at the Southern Recreation Center.
The Matanzas boys have played every team in the district except Nease, which should be their top competition.
“They’re very good,” Brady said. “On paper, it should be a really close match, but, we'll see how it plays out. Hopefully, a couple of their players get knocked out in the early rounds, but I doubt it. We'll see what happens.”
The top two teams at district advance to regionals, but the No. 1 team will host the District 3 runner-up in the first round, while the No. 2 team will go on the road.
“As long as we beat Ponte Vedra out for the No. 2 [spot], we should be good,” Brady said. “But we're aiming for No. 1.”
The No. 1 singles and doubles champs at district advance to the state tournament. Matanzas sophomore Daniel Patsula will be in the running at No. 1 singles. Patsula and Owen Brady are also aiming for the state berth at No. 1 doubles.
Patsula and senior Stanislav Valenteychik did not compete in the St. Augustine match. Adam Stochel Polubiec moved up from No. 2 to No. 1 singles and won 8-1 over Brady Bratic. The Pirates’ Brady moved up from No. 4 to No. 2 singles and also won his match 8-1. Alexander Engblom and Tyler Lemon won at Nos. 4 and 5 singles respectively. Brady and Lemmon won at No. 1 doubles; Daniel Faraj and Engblom won at No. 2.
Madelyn Haté (No. 2) and Elizabeth Patsula (No. 3) won their singles matches in the girls match.
