The Seventh Judicial Circuit Court honored the legacy of former state attorneys during a portrait ceremony on Friday, March 27.
State Attorney R.J. Larizza unveiled the portraits of John Tanner, who served from 1989-1992 and 1997-2008; Steven Alexander, who served from 1993-1996; Dan Warren, who served from 1962-1968; and Stephen Boyles, who served from 1969-1988.
At the ceremony, Larizza said that he spoke with the circuit court staff about this portrait initiative. Judges have their portraits in the courtrooms, he said. So why not honor past state attorneys in the same way?
"I can't think of a job that's more demanding and more taxing on people," Larizza said. "But you can't appreciate it, unless and until you are in those shoes."
Being a state attorney is about taking care of the community, working with judges and supervising the team of lawyers, Larizza said. It's also about "finding the right path" to justice, he added.
"Our job as as state attorneys and as prosecutors is to make justice happen, and that ain't always easy," he said.
The portraits now hang on the third floor of the S. James Foxman Justice Center in Daytona Beach.
