Runners and walkers wore gold capes, Live Like Cameron T-shirts and super hero masks — with eye holes cut out.
The seventh annual Flagler Warrior 5K Fun Run/Walk at Central Park at Town Center in Palm Coast on Sunday, Sept. 21, was not a chip-timed event. About 250 participants ran and walked to raise money for Live Like Cameron and show support for local childhood cancer warriors.
Seven laps around the lake at Central Park equals five kilometers, or 3.1 miles. Each time participants circled the lake, they received a string of gold beads. Gold is the color symbolizing childhood cancer awareness.
Live Like Cameron is a local nonprofit created in 2017 by Melisa and Dan Fulling in memory of their son Cameron, who battled brain cancer for seven years. Cameron passed away on April 6th, 2017, 12 days short of his 10th birthday.
Live Like Cameron supports families with children diagnosed with cancer with financial assistance, celebrating milestones, granting Christmas wishes and providing bags of hope during hospital stays that contain soft bedding, toys, games, books, slippers, healthy snacks and other items they request. This year Live Like Cameron has distributed over 200 bags of hope, volunteer Judy Bucek announced at the event's opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony honored the local warriors. There was a moment of silence for the warrior angels who left too soon. The Flagler Palm Coast High School pep band performed during the ceremony and the run/walk.
The Warrior 5K is held during September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
