An email from the Flagler Schools Transportation Department sent to parents and guardians at 6:54 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, suggested possible bus delays on Friday due to a high volume of driver absences. Don Foley, the district's coordinator of communications, said the email was released in anticipation of possible delays for afternoon routes.
"They saw a few more absentees for afternoon routes and sent out a communication immediately to be transparent just in case there is a delay as they spend the day getting substitutes," Foley said.
At 9:30 a.m., Foley said the afternoon routes looked like they would mostly be on time with help from substitute drivers, including Flagler Schools Chief of Operations Dave Freeman, filling in.
The email read:
"We are currently experiencing a high volume of absenteeism today, which may impact some operations, including transportation services.
For the most up-to-date information regarding your child’s bus route, please visit the Flagler Schools website and navigate to the Transportation page. There, you will find a link titled 'Find the Current Status of Bus Routes' which will provide the latest updates.
