They dressed up in Halloween costumes, bowled under cosmic lights and bid on elaborate gift baskets, all for a good cause — raising money for Make-A-Wish of Central and Northern Florida.
Realty Executives Oceanside hosted the third annual Boo-ling for Wishes fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Palm Coast Lanes.
“This event gets bigger and more meaningful every year,” said Bruce Vinnick, broker/owner of Realty Executives Oceanside, who founded the event with his wife, Shannon. “Seeing our community come together to support such an incredible cause is truly inspiring.”
This year's event raised $30,000 for Make-A-Wish of Central and Northern Florida.
Make-A-Wish recipient Anna Smith and her family attended the event. The Smiths, who live in Port Orange, took a trip to Hawaii in April 2024 for Anna’s wish.
Anna, 13, has had multiple surgeries to try to correct severe refractory epilepsy. She said chose Hawaii as her wish with the goal of relaxing on a beach and drinking out of a coconut, and she got to do just that. But her real reason, she said, for choosing the getaway was to spend uninterrupted time with her parents, Chad and Rebecca, and her older brother, Liam.
“She’s been in the hospital quite a bit,” Rebecca Smith, said. “We traveled to Miami for her treatment, so it was kind of where we had to divide and conquer, and so older brother was at home with the grandparents, and we were down in Miami with her, and she was going through surgery, and for her, she just wanted to get away from it all, and she wanted to relax and spend time with the whole family, and it was absolutely incredible.”
Rebecca said they haven’t been able to get Anna’s epilepsy under control, but she has been doing pretty well under the circumstances.
“We have our challenges,” Rebecca said, “but she handles them beautifully with a smile, and we just do our best and give her happiness as much as we can.”
Jillian Wilson, the development and community engagement coordinator for the Make-A-Wish Jacksonville Region, attended the Boo-ling fundraiser. Palm Coast Vice Mayor Theresa Pontieri helped kick off the evening. Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Joe Barile judged the costume contest.
The event was a sell-out with all 24 lanes filled with bowlers wearing inflatables and costumes. Jennifer McGee's family all dressed up as Star Wars characters. Andrew Trotter and AWT Property Management dressed up as Scooby-Doo and friends with their Mystery Machine. Others dressed up as members of the rock band, Kiss; hockey players and refs; characters from a Wizard of Oz; and Minions.
Stellar MLS served as event sponsor for the third straight year with 17 other businesses providing sponsorships and over 50 businesses and individuals providing support, organizers said.
