The American Association of University Women Flagler County has been advancing equity for women and girls in Flagler County since 1984. At the AAUW Flagler Branch monthly meeting on Oct. 11, three of the four middle school girls selected to attend the AAUW Florida Tech Trek summer camp in June shared their experiences.

This year’s campers were Sophia Costa, Kennedy Hardie, Analiah Hester, and Gabriella Hille.

The weeklong Tech Trek camp was held at Stetson University in DeLand and Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter where the girls lived on campus in residence halls. The curriculum was designed to spark curiosity in STEM subjects — science, technology, engineering, and math — for seventh grade girls.

One of this year’s hands-on workshops included dissecting a sheep eyeball. Each of these campers reported an increased interest in pursuing a career in medicine and other sciences as a result of their experiences.

Potential campers are nominated by their seventh grade math and science teachers. The application process includes writing an essay and appearing for an interview. Final selection is made by an AAUW Florida state committee.  Since the program’s inception in 2013, 58 Flagler middle school girls have been selected to attend AAUW Florida Tech Trek.

The $1,500 cost per camper is covered by the AAUW Flagler County Branch. A $50 registration fee is the only cost to the family. Individual and community donations to help support future Tech Trek participants are greatly appreciated. Checks can be mailed to: AAUW Flagler (Tech Trek), P.O. Box 354873, Palm Coast, FL  32135-4873. Online donations may be made through a secure payment portal at https://flaglercounty-fl.aauw.net
