For the third year in a row, Motto Mortgage is Taking a Swing at Hunger, and over 120 people have signed up to participate.
The Taking a Swing at Hunger Golf Charity tournament aims to feed families and children in the community who might otherwise go hungry. The tournament will be held at the Hammock Dunes Golf Club’s Links Course on Oct. 27.
Motto Mortgage co-owner Jayd Capela said more golfers are on a waitlist.
“It’s going to be the most we’ve ever had,” Capela said. “It’s a really cool experience to have that many people in the community, one, support the cause, but [also] to want to be a part of it.”
The tournament will be a four-person scramble and costs $200 per player. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. with mimosas and a Bloody Mary breakfast. The tournament starts at 10 a.m. with a lunch reception afterward.

Capela and his mother, Pam Capela, also a co-owner of Motto Mortgage, began contributing to Motto Mortgage company’s mission to “feed your community,” in 2020. It started with canned food drives but, Capela said, they saw what other Motto offices were doing across the country and wanted to expand.
That’s when the idea of a golf tournament was dreamed up.
“It’s just rolled from one event to another event, traction has just gained, and it’s just electric,” Capela said.
This year, he said, the Hammock Dunes Club offered up their Links Course. Capela and his parents are members of Hammock Dunes Club; he said the club is typically for members only or professional tournaments.
“They graciously opened their doors to us,” he said.
The proceeds of the tournament will benefit the nonprofit Cornerstone 386, which was created by a group of real estate offices and employees.
The tournament and charity, he said, are not just about a few people organizing it, but about how the “community comes together to help these people and how our team has come together to establish this.”
“It’s a team of us,” Capela said. “We wanted to be able to help people across our region in our county, but not tied to a company.”
In the previous two years, the tournament has raised over $30,000 and delivered nearly 50,000 pounds of food, according to the charity’s website. According to data on the Take A Swing at Hunger website, more than 613,000 children in Florida faced hunger in early 2024.
This year, Cornerstone will donate the proceeds to Care Cupboard Food Pantry in Bunnell. Capela said in the past Cornerstone has been able to donate about 400 or 500 turkeys each year for the previous two years.
This year, he said, he hopes to reach 1,000 turkeys donated over the last three years.
For Capela, he said he comes from a family of service and he enjoys being able to help people who have fallen on hard times.
“To just give them a sigh of relief in such a stressful time when it’s supposed to be about happiness and joy and togetherness — it feels really good,” he said.
