The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a home cleaning service employee on theft-related charges following a month-long investigation that determined a maid had pawned multiple pieces of jewelry stolen from her clients’ homes.
Detectives began investigating after a victim reported his recently deceased wife’s jewelry, driver’s license, and bank cards were missing, and there were multiple fraudulent transactions on her cards. The victim first noticed the items were missing after having his home cleaned by Alicia’s Cleaning Service in August. A second victim also reported multiple pieces of jewelry stolen from her home around the same time. Both victims noted that a new employee had recently cleaned their respective homes.
Through investigative means, FCSO General Assignment Unit detectives determined that Kayla Conner, 38, of Bunnell, stole property from both residences during her employment with Alicia’s Cleaning Service and later pawned the stolen items at local pawnshops.
“Residents hire cleaning services to help make their homes cleaner, not to have their valuables stolen. Thanks to the quick work of our detectives, this thief is now behind bars where she belongs,” said Sheriff Rick Staly “We will continue working to return stolen property to the rightful owners.”
Conner was arrested for grand theft from a dwelling (over $40), false verification of ownership to a secondhand dealer (less than $300), grand theft from a dwelling (over $100), dealing in stolen property, grand theft from a person over 65 years old (over $300), and violation of probation. She was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where she is being held without bond.
“When you hire a cleaning company, verify they conduct background checks on their employees and have insurance,” added Sheriff Staly.
Conner was previously arrested for grand theft and obstruction and was on felony probation at the time of her arrest.
Detectives are still working to identify the owners of several pawned items. If you have information related to this investigation or believe you are a victim after your home was cleaned by Kayla Conner, you are encouraged to call FCSO detectives at 386-313-4911.
