The 17th annual 150-mile Super Scenic Garage Sale hosted around 400 participants this year.
The Super Scenic Garage Sale is organized by the Friends of A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway, a nonprofit that promotes the preservation of A1A. The Garage Sale took place on Saturday, Nov. 15 and stretched from Jacksonville to Daytona Beach.
“The cities are finding value in doing it,” Garage Sale Coordinator Danielle Anderson said. “They're providing a service for their residents, and they're creating exposure for small businesses.”
Between all the community sites, businesses and homes, Anderson said there were close to 200 registered, but many paid a flat rate so multiple groups could participate at one location.
“Some of those [sites] are neighborhoods, they’re community centers, different places like that,” she said. “So one registration would have 15 or 20 vendors at one place.”
Many Garage Sale shoppers came out to the event, she said, all along the 150-mile route. FOX 35 event sent their reporter David Martin to do a three-hour segment on the Garage Sale, which encouraged even more people to come out and shop, Anderson said.
The Garage Sale used to be only 72 miles along A1A but for the 10th anniversary, Anderson suggested the group expand to the connecting Florida Scenic Highways, A1A Ocean Island’s Trail, the Ormond Scenic Loop and the Halifax Heritage Byway. Across all four byways, Anderson said, its 150 miles from Ponce Inlet to Fernandina Beach.
Anderson said she spent Nov. 15 shopping at the Garage Sale herself. Many of the participants depend on the money they earn during the annual event, she said, to help them pay for their holiday season.
One of the Friends of A1A’s foundational pillars is economic development, which the Garage Sale plays right into, she said.
The money raised by the Garage Sale supports the Friends of A1A’s All American Road projects, like the Kid’s Ocean Day environmental education field trip and free mobile audio tour.
“It's about providing visitor resources for people who are traveling here, and it's all American Road, it's not only just national visitors, but international visitors.”
