Dear Editor:
I am writing this to raise awareness for a cause that affects more than just our community — bike safety. As we know there are always more motorcycle casualties during Bike Week, and I believe there are some preventative measures we can take to reduce those numbers.
On March 2, there were five traffic fatalities in Flagler and Volusia counties. Among them two were two motorcyclists. I noticed that this year we have taken certain safety precautions. For instance there is a ban on slingshot vehicles on Main Street in Daytona Beach since they increase the likelihood of motorcycle accidents.
Another safety measure we should take is for businesses in Volusia County to stop the selling liquor after 11 p.m. This would include bars and liquor/convenience stores. I think a big problem is that bars are open until 1 and 2 in the morning and motorcyclists are still drinking and riding around.
The common theme for drinking and driving needs to be consistent for all motorized vehicles, and legally it is, but bikers typically do not abide by these laws like they should during events like Biketoberfest and Bike Week. If these measures are taken to help prevent bikers from being under the influence, then we might see a decrease in the number of accidents involving bikers during these events.
