The Flagler County Sheriff's Office has filed additional charges against a former Flagler County Fire Rescue paramedic who was arrested last year for sexually battering an unconscious 19-year-old woman while transporting her to the hospital.

The FCSO reports that James Melady, who was arrested on Sept. 11, 2024, is facing fraud charges after detectives determined he had defrauded multiple victims by stealing their credit cards and identification while performing his official duties as a paramedic, a press release stated.

In one instance, Melady stole a 92-year-old victim's debit card after FCFR responded to an emergency in which she had fallen and needed to be transported to the hospital. Melady was given her purse to bring to the hospital. The FCSO reports he used her debit card several days later to make two purchases totalling $715.38 at Sam's Club in Daytona Beach.

“After a thorough investigation by our General Assignment Unit and our partners at the State Attorney’s Office, it turns out that not only is this person a predator and a pervert, but he’s also a thief,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said in the press release. “He continually violated his oath and used his position as a first responder to take advantage of victims."

In a statement, Flagler County stated it is taking the allegations seriously and that it is cooperating with FCSO's investigation.

"Our organization is committed to the highest standards of ethical conduct and public trust," the county statement reads. "The actions of any one individual do not reflect the integrity and dedication of the hardworking members of our team who serve our community with professionalism and compassion every day. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are unable to provide further details at this time. Any inquiries regarding the investigation should be directed to the Flagler Sheriff’s Office."
