The Volusia County School Board appointed a new assistant principal for Mainland High School on Tuesday, June 24.
Damon Barrs, who was the school's administrative dean, has worked for Volusia County Schools since 2004. He started as a paraprofessional at Seabreeze High School before becoming the campus advisor at Hinson Middle School, and later Deltona High School. He also worked as a behavior specialist at Behavior Change Artists in Daytona Beach, and was an ESE teacher at Campbell Middle and Deltona High before moving on to Mainland as a teacher on assignment.
"It is an incredible honor to stand here before you today as the newly appointed assistant principal of Mainland High School," Barrs said. "I want to express my sincere appreciation to our current administration team for your support and your belief in me."
As a graduate of Mainland himself — class of 1990 — Barrs said the appointment was deeply personal.
"Many of my values that I carry today are rooted from Mainland High School," Barrs said. "From those classroom walls and the classroom halls. Even more special is the legacy I'm honored to continue."
His father, Amos Barrs, dedicated over 30 years to VCS, most of them at Mainland. He was a business and vocational education teacher and served as the department's chairman at the time of his retirement in 1996.
"To stand where he stood and to serve the community he served is both humbling and inspiring," Damon Barrs said.
