Flagler Palm Coast High School Teacher of the Year Alex Giogianni is the teacher for the Bulldog Entrepreneurial Program of Innovation. This is his ninth year as a teacher. Before taking over the entrepreneurial program three years ago, he taught a variety of social studies courses and spent two years teaching at i3 Academy, FPC’s former project-based learning program.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

I first got into teaching through coaching. During my final semester of college, I completed an internship with coach Dave Halliday, helping out the (Flagler Palm Coast) cross country team. Pretty quickly I realized this was what I wanted to do. I really enjoy playing a small role in the development of students and athletes, during the most formative years of their lives.

How does the nomination make you feel?

I am honored to receive it, however I believe this is ultimately a reflection of my students, and the incredible work they have done over the last three years to turn our program around.

What is your favorite thing about being a teacher?

The relationships I have built with students over the years. Seeing them go on to become professionals, have families and turn into fantastic human beings.

What is one thing you are taking away from this experience?

How lucky I am to have had some incredible students over the last few years, who have really bought into the goals of our program.

Being a teacher can be challenging at times. What keeps you motivated?

I try not to let the outside noise interfere with what is happening in my classroom. While there may be times that are difficult, for the most part I enjoy my job and what I do in the classroom on a daily basis.

What is a memorable experience that influenced the way you approach educating students?

In 2021, I was moved to be a teacher at the former i3 Academy, which was a fully immersive project based learning environment. During my time teaching at i3, I was able to experience what thriving, student-led education looks like. These experiences not only transformed the way I approach education, but the way I approach life.

If there was one piece of wisdom you could share with students, what would it be?

To not worry about failure, and to work relentlessly hard to achieve their goals.

Aside from your job, what are some other things you enjoy in your daily life?

I enjoy spending time with my family, especially my wife, and 2-year-old daughter Sunday. I am a huge Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fan, as well as the self proclaimed No. 1 Lebron James fan in the world.
