George Boone Baird, aged 92, passed away on December 3, 2025, at Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House in Palm Coast, Florida.
George was born in Cumberland, Maryland on September 9, 1933, the son of William Baird and Margaret Cunningham. He graduated from Romney High School in Romney, West Virginia, where he led the football team to a state championship in 1949. He went on to attend college at Potomac State College in Keyser, West Virginia and George Washington University in Washington, D.C. An athlete in football, basketball, and baseball, he was the only athlete in the history of Potomac State College to letter in three sports over two years. He continued to participate in athletics by becoming a sports official, referee, and umpire in Northern Virginia from 1957 to 1986. George later enlisted in the Navy Medical Corps and was stationed near Memphis, Tennessee. He also had a passion for hunting and fishing, where he would travel to West Yellowstone, Montana for thirty-five consecutive years to fly fish. His concern for the environment led him into a career with the Fairfax County Public Works Pollution Management Division, where he held different positions of leadership ending with safety officer and trainer at the Norman Cole Wastewater Treatment Facility in Lorton, Virginia, retiring with thirty years of public service. Upon moving to Palm Coast, Florida in 1986, he enjoyed the camaraderie of the men’s golf league.
In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his sister, Nannie Lou Delany of Palm Coast, Florida, William Baird of Appomattox, Virginia, and his first wife Peggy Ann Taylor of Arlington, Virginia. He is survived by his wife Susie Baird, son Ralph Baird of Woodbridge, Virginia, grandsons William and Joseph and their mother Carole Baird of Guilford, Connecticut, nephew Ted Saunders and wife Michele of Orlando, Florida and many other nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will occur at his final resting place in West Virginia at a later date.
