The Seventh Judicial Circuit State Attorney's office has dismissed charges against a Flagler County Sheriff's Office detective who was arrested by the Ormond Beach Police Department for fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement on Thursday, Dec. 4.
The FCSO reported in a press release on Tuesday, Dec. 9, that the State Attorney's Office filed an order of no information in the case against Detective Ardit Coma, 28, who OBPD reported failed to pull over for a traffic stop after he was spotted going over 30 mph over the posted speed limit in the 1400 block of North U.S. 1 in Ormond Beach.
OBPD reported that Coma continued driving northbound, including driving around stop sticks that were deployed at North U.S. 1 and Pine Tree Drive, at which point a felony stop was conducted by OBPD and Volusia Sheriff's Office deputies.
The FCSO will now conduct an internal investigation to determine if there were any violations of their general orders, policies, procedures, rules or regulations, according to the press release; Coma had been on his way to work when he was arrested.
“As we said initially, we believe in the criminal justice system," Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said in the press release. "The case was dismissed just like it would be for any citizen based on the evidence and facts of the case presented to the State Attorney's Office by the Ormond Beach Police Department. I personally reviewed the arrest report and was surprised that an arrest was made based on the lack of evidence showing he was intentionally trying to flee, while driving an agency vehicle. Although the criminal charge was dismissed, the facts appear clear that Detective Coma was speeding in an agency vehicle. I believe in accountability for everyone in our agency and transparency with our community, and our internal investigation will determine what policies were violated, and he will be held accountable. In fact, he will likely be held accountable to a higher standard than an average driver committing a traffic infraction."
Coma has been reassigned to administrative non-law enforcement duties while the internal investigation is completed.
