Brianna Garcia of Bunnell used to travel to Sharkey's Cuts for Kids in Winter Park to get a haircut for her 3-year-old son, Brantley Cucco. Now she only has to drive about 25 minutes to the new Sharkey's in Ormond Beach.
They would often stop for a haircut in Winter Park on the way to Disney World. It was worth it, Garcia said. On Friday, Aug. 1, Brantley sat in the Spider-Man car to get a wash, cut and blow dry at the new Sharkey's Cuts or Kids Ormond Beach at 1345 Granada Blvd., Unit 7.
Brantley was one of the first customers at the Ormond Beach salon, which held its ribbon cutting on Friday morning. The grand opening was set to last three days, Friday-Sunday, with visits scheduled from Cinderella, Elsa and Ariel and Spider-Man swinging in all three days.
Not having a local Sharkey's was also the inspiration for owner Danielle Summa to open the new store in Ormond.
"We had trouble finding a place to get our girls' hair cut," said Summa's husband, Paul Summa, who is the assistant general manager of Palm Coast Ford. "We found one up north, and opening one closer to home became my wife's dream."
The growing company expects to have 214 stores nationwide by the end of the year, said Franchise Supporter Caitie Philhower. But before now, the closest store to Flagler County and Ormond Beach was in St. Johns, in northern St. Johns County.
Sharkey's has novelty cars that toddlers can "drive" while they are getting their hair cut. They can watch cartoons and when they're done, they receive a Sharkey's bookmark, balloon and lollipop. Older kids can play video games at one of the Xbox stations during their cuts. Girls cuts come with a complimentary mini-cure which includes a nail polish change and a glamour ring, according to Sharkeyscutsforkids.com.
For a child's first haircut, parents receive a certificate and lock of their child's hair as a keepsake.
The Ormond Beach salon also has adult stations with a "glamour studio" with lighted mirrors to address blemishes.
Danielle Summa said the salon had 186 appointments scheduled for the first three days before the doors even opened. That's a national Sharkey's record for a three-day opening event, said Philhower, who was on hand for Friday's festivities.
"It's very difficult to get good grand openings in Florida. But they blew it out of the water," Philhower said.
Danielle Summa said every child gets a poker chip that goes in a jar at the register, representing $1 which will go to the Flagler County Education Foundation. The Ed Foundation will be the Ormond store's chosen charity for the first year of the business, she said.
Ed Foundation Executive Director Teresa Rizzo, who had been Danielle Summa's teacher at Flagler Palm Coast High School, was on hand for Friday's ribbon cutting.
Sharkey's Cuts for Kids Ormond Beach will also have a back-to-school promotion throughout August with $7 off cuts, Danielle Summa said.
Danielle Summa wants to open additional Sharkey's franchises in the area, Paul Summa said.
"She has a dream and wants to make it work, to own a few of these," he said.
