In preparation for an increase in traffic on Flagler County roadways, as well as an increase in vehicle and pedestrian traffic in our beachside communities, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) and our law enforcement partners will increase patrols throughout Memorial Day weekend to ensure everyone can enjoy a safe Memorial Day weekend.
FCSO will be participating in the nationwide Crash Awareness & Reduction Effort (CARE) patrol operation through May 27, which focuses increased law enforcement presence on interstate and U.S. highways during high-accident locations to reduce crashes. The FCSO Traffic Enforcement Unit and the Florida Highway Patrol, the Flagler Beach Police Department, and the Bunnell Police Department are all partnering with FCSO for this traffic safety initiative to make our roadways throughout Flagler County safer. The team will focus on aggressive driving, speeding, and seatbelt enforcement. Additional patrol units will also be dedicated to D.U.I enforcement throughout the weekend.
“To honor our fallen heroes safely this weekend, make sure you have a designated driver and remember the purpose of the holiday weekend is honor the sacrifice of our fallen military heroes,” said Sheriff Rick Staly, “The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office will be out in full force to make sure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend. Our deputies give up their holiday to make sure yours is enjoyable, so let’s do our best to avoid spending time in new bars at the Green Roof Inn.”
The increased presence is not just on our roadways. On county waterways, the FCSO Marine Unit and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will be on patrol watching for boaters under the influence and operating recklessly.
“Plan to have a sober driver or captain if you plan to drink. It’s really that simple. If you choose not to, you can count on spending your holiday weekend at the Green Roof Inn,” added Sheriff Staly. “We want everyone to have a safe Memorial Day weekend, so don’t endanger yourself or others by driving or boating impaired.”
FCSO encourages everyone to do their part to prevent crimes of opportunity by locking their car doors and removing valuables from plain view, especially at the beach access areas. People should always be aware of their surroundings, and report suspicious activity to the Sheriff’s Office by calling 386-313-4911.
