At the Flagler Palm Coast-Matanzas senior swim meet, everybody participates to recognize the senior swimmers from both high schools.
On Wednesday, Oct. 11, the schools honored five FPC seniors (Malina Hreib, Julia Kurdziel, Hannah Bango-Sanchez, Alexandra Pitts and Michelle Marinez) and three Matanzas seniors (Annabell Chambers, Karolina Jaronis and Sam Peters) at the Palm Coast Aquatics Center.
FPC and Matanzas each formed a line in the pool. The seniors walked between the lines and were splashed from both sides on their way to the pool deck as their coaches highlighted their scholastic and athletic achievements and read their senior messages. Once out of the pool they were handed a towel and gifts and were joined by their parents.
The senior recognition is the highlight of the final regular-season swim meet of the year for the Bulldogs and Pirates.
Just as the schools shared the senior spotlight, they also shared victories. FPC won the girls competition 102-66, while Matanzas won the boys competition 112-55.
The Matanzas boys won all but one event and set three school records along the way. The boys 200-yard medley relay of Teddy Vanderbilt, Keaton Lasicki, Sam Peters and Leo Peters set a new Pirates mark with a time of 1:49.94. Vanderbilt also broke the school record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.55 seconds and Sam Peters broke the 50 freestyle in 23.37 seconds.
