Sixties-themed floats, hippie-styled walkers, jeeps galore and a roaming “Abraham Lincoln” cruised the streets of Ormond Beach on Saturday, Dec. 9. for the city’s 32nd annual Home for the Holidays Christmas Parade. The parade’s theme — “A Groovy Christmas” — added a splash of tie dye to the holiday tradition.
This year there were close to 100 entrants and approximately 20 event sponsors who were instrumental in making the parade a success. Abaco Windows was one of the contributors and also took home the Ormond Beach MainStreet Ryke Hundredmark President Cup award. They were responsible for carrying Santa and Mrs. Claus in the procession.
Ormond Beach MainStreet provided cookies and water while the Daytona State College orchestra played holiday tunes. Board member Lisa Rademacher was manning the goodie table with three Ormond Beach Middle School volunteers—Anna McDonough, Olivia Rodriguez and Anabelle Rademacher. Their hours contribute to school service hour requirements.
“I do this every year and I think it’s really fun,” Anabelle said.“It makes everybody happy.”
Every year, the Ormond Beach Police Cadets, previously the Ormond Beach Police Explorers, help to keep attendees safe by controlling pedestrian traffic and keeping children from running out into the oncoming parade vehicles. Mentor Victoria Lancaster is the Evidence and Crime Scene Supervisor for the Ormond Beach Police Department. She has been with the department for 10 years and a mentor for 5.
“They needed a female mentor because we have girls on the team,” she said. “I haven’t looked back since. Even when my daughter is done with it (being a cadet), I’ll stay on because they become your kids and you just have to see them through.”
Brian Nave was once again the master of ceremonies and Julia Truilo was the Grand Marshal. Truilo was Ormond Beach MainStreet’s executive director for almost 10 years before handing the reins over to Becky Parker last year.
Community Events Coordinator Sonja Johnson said she would like to give a shout out to all of the sponsors and the judges.
“The judges had a really tough time this year, since there were so many wonderful floats, walkers and vehicles,” she said. “Save the date — Saturday December 14, 2024.”
