Children ages 8-12 created their own gingerbread plushie in a workshop titled, "Oh Snap! Gingerbread Plushies," hosted by the Ormond Memorial Art Museum on Wednesday, Dec. 6 as they celebrated the upcoming Christmas season.
To get in the holiday spirit, the children gathered with Diamond Johnson, curator of youth and outreach programs, to create a gingerbread plushie during the workshop. Each person was able to choose the pose they wanted their plushies to be in by tracing a cutout of their selected gingerbread shape onto brown felt. The children then cut out two of the same shape and worked with Johnson to sew the two together, leaving an opening for stuffing to go in, which participant Aaron Dye said was his favorite part of the activity. Once their gingerbread friends were sewn together, with the stuffing inside, the children uniquely decorated each character.
Some added buttons, hair, mustaches or rhinestones. Each plushie was also given a name to finish off the creation of their gingerbread friend.
OMAM's next children's art program will take place from 2-3:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 18. Children ages 4-12 will get a tour of the Emmons Cottage and decorate a winter cottage or gingerbread house of their own. Workshop costs $13 for museum members and $16 for non-members. Visit ormondartmuseum.org.
