Twin sisters Mackenzie Roy and Ariana Roy led the Seabreeze girls cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the Bobcat Classic in Gainesville on Sept. 10. Mackenzie Roy finished 10th with a time of 21:17.30, while Ariana Roy was 17th with a time of 21:38.20.
The Seabreeze boys team competed in the Coach Joe McKinney Classic in New Smyrna Beach on Sept. 10. Noah Parris led the Sandcrabs with a time of 18:26.90 to finish 22nd. Tyler Lewis was 27th with a time of 18:49.10.
Seabreeze and Mainland also competed in the University High School Midweek Invite on Sept. 7. Mainland's Molly Bronson placed sixth in the girls race with a time of 24:44.00. Mainland's Kiera Williams was 10th at 25:21.90, while teammate Veronica O'Brien was one spot back in 11th place with a time of 25:22.50.
The Seabreeze boys and girls teams will compete in the Embry-Riddle Cross Country Classic on Saturday, Sept. 17.
The Matanzas High School Band of Pirates unveiled new uniforms at the football team's varsity game against Tocoi Creek on Sept. 2. They are just the second band uniforms in the school's history.
"We are very fortunate that Flagler Schools purchased the uniforms for the band program," said Ryan Schulz, the director of bands for Matanzas High School. "The uniforms were designed by me and Demoulin Uniforms and were made by Demoulin. Former Principal Jeff Reaves asked to get the uniform project started last year and we went to work. It took about six months to produce the uniforms. The students are very excited about the uniforms and will wear them with pride for the many years to come."
Sean Norris and Anya Fox are the Band of Pirates' drum majors.
Matanzas' girls golf team has had three of its seven matches canceled because of rain, including the Sept. 13 tri-match with Tocoi Creek and Pedro Menendez that was scheduled for the King & Bear Course at World Golf Village.
But in the matches the Pirates have played, they are sporting an undefeated record at 5-0, including a double win over Menendez and Flagler Palm Coast on Sept. 8 at Palm Harbor Golf Club. Sophomore Zoe Alred led Matanzas with a 41.
Junior Alexandra Gazzoli missed the match because she was taking a college visit, coach Brandie Alred said. Gazzoli, who finished second at the Class 2A state meet last year, shot a high-school career low of 5-under-par 31 at Palm Harbor in a match against Spruce Creek on Sept. 1.
"She's driving greens on all of the straight par 4's," Brandie Alred said.
