With four successful shows of “Seussical Jr.” from May 20 to May 22, at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center, the Children’s Musical Theatre Workshop continues to celebrate 40 years of teaching kids the art of performing on stage.
CMT was started as a platform for school-aged children to learn how to sing, dance and act. It is still a family-run business with Artistic Director Cynthia Simmons at the helm, who is also one of the original founders.
It has been 10 years since CMT last produced “Seussical Jr.”
Recent college graduate and CMT alumni Caleb Roberts played JoJo in the second “Seussical,” which was over 11 years ago. He had returned to help with props and to run the spot light.
“All the alumni come back,” longtime volunteer Beth Oatway said. “My son is here helping too. They come back asking, 'Please, please can we help?'”
The theatre company is currently gearing up for summer camps. In June, CMT offers a pirate camp, the Pastel Pop Stars and Rainbow Rockers camp, and Encanto. July will be the summer music theatre camp, which ends with the campers performing in “Matilda Jr.,” the musical.
