An Ormond Beach man charged with second degree murder after he shot his girlfriend in the head at a Holly Hill shooting range in October 2021 was extradited from New York to Florida on Feb. 24.

According to his arrest report, 23-year-old Alec Almanzar and his girlfriend, Ayadilis Chalas, were at the Hot Shots Shooting Range in Holly Hill on Oct. 7, when Almanzar put a gun to both of their heads while in an embrace and fired. Holly Hill Police reported that the pair kissed and spoke to each prior to Almanzar firing the shot, which killed Chalas on the scene and resulted in Almanzar's hospitalization.

During the shooting investigation, Ormond Beach Police were conducting a wellbeing check at the couple's home after family members were alarmed by a social media post made by Chalas, in which she thanked people who had checked up on her and said "you don't have to worry about us anymore, we are going to a safe place away from this world."

Almanzar was released from the hospital on Dec. 15. A warrant was issued on Dec. 23. He is being held with no bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail.
