Palm Coast resident Theodore Patchett was the men's winner at the Sunshine State Skirmish powerlifting event Feb. 12 at the Southside Strength Gym in Bunnell, while Roni Thomas was the women's winner.
Their scores were calculated using the Wilks formula that measures the relative strengths of lifters in different classes. Andrew Kimbal won the highest total award, lifting 1,472 pounds in the three lifts.
The event was sanctioned by the United States Powerlifting Coalition. The Southside Strength Gym holds two or three competitions a year, said gym owner Jake Rohloff, but this was the first time the USPC held an event there. Rohloff said the USPC will be back for another event at the gym in October.
Rohloff said there were 19 competitors in the event, including Jerry Marentette, 62, the most decorated athlete in the history of Canadian powerlifting, and about 60 to 70 spectators.
