In a defensive battle, two interception returns for touchdowns made the difference as Flagler Palm Coast defeated Matanzas 21-0 in a flag football game April 20 at the Bulldogs' stadium.
Emma Laupepa and Emma Swearingen each had a pick-6 for FPC in its final regular-season game. Laupepa also threw a long touchdown pass to Giva Clavizzao for the Bulldogs' final score in the fourth quarter.
FPC led 7-0 at halftime, but Laupepa made it 13-0 with her 30-yard interception return in the third quarter. Laupepa's 2-point conversion pass from 10 yards to Dyllis Mballesube following Clavizzao's TD accounted for the final points.
"It's always pretty close games when we play each other," FPC coach Tony Coates said. "In the first half, they played really well. Coach (Jim) Gambone called great plays for us, but we dropped some catchable passes."
The Pirates were scheduled to play Lake Weir at Belleview in a District 9-1A tournament game on April 26.
The Bulldogs (6-5) are hosting the District 3-2A tournament with quarterfinal games scheduled for April 27. FPC, the sixth seed, was paired against No. 3 New Smyrna Beach. The semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, April 28 at 6 p.m., with the championship game following at 7:30.
