Flagler Beach to get new fire truck; Bunnell will move to new City Hall

Flagler Beach has approved a budget that will include money for a new fire truck —  a 2020 Pierce Enforcer that will cost $546,333 and replace the Flagler Beach Fire Department’s 25-year-old Engine 111.

The city budget for the upcoming year will be approximately $7.08 million.

The City Commission approved the budget 4-1 in a second budget hearing on Sept. 23, with Commissioner Rick Belhumeur, who’d criticized the propose truck purchase, voting no.

The department also has an older ladder truck, so the new Pierce would bring the Fire Departments’ number of apparatuses to three.

The Bunnell City Commission also approved a budget with money set aside for major new expenses: In its case, the construction of a new City Hall complex and police headquarters on land the city is buying on Commerce Parkway, near the Wendy’s south of State Road 100

The city has approved a contract to purchase the land at 2400 Commerce Parkway, and plans to sell off its current government complex at 201 West Moody Blvd., which has water damage.

It’s the second time in recent memory that the city administration has been displaced due to water damage. Bunnell moved out of the old Coquina City Hall building in 2009 for the same reason, and spent five years at the county government’s complex on S.R. 100 before buying its current building for $600,000 in 2014. 

As it did before, the city will use the county government’s facilities in the interim period. Construction costs for the new City Hall and Police Department facility are expected to total $5.77 million.

The Bunnell City Commission voted unanimously at a Sept. 27 meeting to approve the city’s $29.68 million budget and a millage rate of 7.43 mills for the upcoming fiscal year.

The property tax rate, $7.43 per $1,000 worth of taxable value, is an increase of 23.26% over the rollback rate — the rate that would have generated the same dollar amount of tax revenue as the city received this year — of $6.0281 per $1,000 worth of taxable value.

No members of the public addressed the commission about the budget or property tax rate.
