The high-energy Matanzas Pirates beat the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs in softball 4-1 on Thursday, March 25.
Matanzas took the lead with senior Alyssa Payne stealing home to put her team on the board. Emma Wood struck out five batters from the pitcher's circle for Matanzas.
After the game, both coaching staffs were happy with the way their teams played. Matanzas is led by coach Sabrina Manhart. Even with a player out due to injury, the Pirates are still battling. Matanzas is now 5-2 and first in its district.
Flagler Palm Coast coach Meghan Bainbridge said her girls had a few errors that cost them the game but overall had an improvement at the plate with fewer strikeouts than previous games. With a young team, she is happy with their energy.
