The Lady Sandcrabs’ softball team rode the Lopez Green Wave to a 16-2 win Thursday, March 11 at Father Lopez High School.
Seabreeze was ahead 5-0 by the third inning when Father Lopez decided to challenge their lead. Yissel Aybar hit a fly ball and ran to first on an outfield error. Hannah Wilen hit a double, driving Aybar in for the run. Wilen scored after an infield error, wrapping up the inning 5-2.
Freshman pitchers, Julie Kelley of Seabreeze, and Emma Wilen, of Father Lopez, battled equally during the first innings of the game. Then, Kelley hit a triple in the top of the fourth inning, resulting in Ginna Mohr’s run across home plate. The score was 12-2 and bases were loaded when Kelley got her second at bat for the inning. She hit a line drive to center field for a triple, forcing runners Samantha Vonn Hein, Kristan Wallace and Mohr in to score. Kelley ran in on Abbey Mele’s RBI making the tally 16-2.
Kelley faced 17 batters with 14 of them being first pitch strikes. Her strength on the mound lead to 7 strikeouts and limited the Green Wave to 2 runs. Kelley’s 3 hits, 3 runs, 5 RBIs and efforts from her teammates gave Seabreeze an 8-1 record for the season.
“Coach Cravotta and I are so proud of our girls,” head coach Jen Mollo said. “They always bring their 'A' game in performance and sportsmanship no matter who we play, win or lose. And the growth and improvement in this short season is already remarkable.”
The Seabreeze Sandcrabs’ girls’ softball team will play the Atlantic Sharks Monday, March 15 for a district game in Port Orange.
