The Lady Sandcrabs' flag football team was denied the extra points by the Lady Barracudas yards from the end zone Thursday, March 4, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, resulting in a 13-12 loss.
Seabreeze played its first official game of the season against New Smyrna Beach, with Lady Sandcrabs sporting “Crush the Cudas” in ink on their legs.
The Barracudas scored first, with a second-quarter touchdown pass by quarterback Anna Enrst to wide receiver Jamya Martin. The 'Cudas continued their attack with a pass completion from Timia Merrick to wide receiver Maylee Smith for a second touchdown. The duo followed it up with an extra point for a 13-0 lead going into halftime.
After their halftime huddle, it was the Sandcrabs’ turn to take control of the game. Even though one of Seabreeze's top players, Avery Dellinger, was out of play due to injury, an interception by Tonila Jackson seemed to shift the energy of the team. Quarterback Chelsea McQuarrie passed to Morgan Long for a touchdown in the third quarter, bringing the game to 13-6. Seabreeze refused to stop their push toward the end zone and the fourth quarter brought another touchdown by the McQuarrie-Long combo. But several attempts to get the extra points were foiled by the Barracudas.
“We really needed those extra points,” Seabreeze head coach, Todd Barnes, stated. “But we will be back. It’s a long season.”
The Seabreeze Sandcrabs play the Pine Ridge Panthers in a district game Tuesday, March 9, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
