The sun had barely begun to rise behind Maxwell’s Fitness Programs in Port Orange as the MaxFit Games competitors warmed up in preparation for the kickoff: a 1-mile, four-lap run through storage units. Owner Rob Maxwell stood at the start-finish line with a stopwatch in hand, going over the rules early Sunday morning on June 6.
He has owned Maxwell’s since 1993 and has hosted the games for six years. He attributes his successful reign in the fitness industry to his desire to offer tailor-made training programs that are specific to his clients’ needs. He also brings the benefits of his personal experience in fitness, a master’s degree in exercise physiology and a license in sports nutrition.
“Success, I believe, comes from knowing that I’m a specialist in training and not a gym,” Maxwell said. “Really giving people the information and training they need, figuring out what the person needs and delivering 100%.”
Starting the MaxFit Games was a means for Maxwell to offer a sports-oriented experience that highlighted different aspects of an individual’s fitness. He wanted to give more to the competitors than just a 5K, so he has always included a variety of challenges. This year’s categories included: a 1-mile run, agility ladders, medicine ball throw, Smith machine squats and chest press.
Friendly rivals from Revive Fitness and Lifestyle, located in Ormond Beach, arrived ready to battle. Owner Arnold Kolozsvari and trainer Chrissi Pfeil won the mixed couples division. Kolozsvari also won the men’s chest press with 100 total repetitions while partner Pfeil won the women’s agility ladder with a blistering 20.5. Revive trainer Angelika Grubel took home the prize of $100 for placing first in the open division and for completing the most chest presses in the women’s division with 162 repetitions.
“I truly love competing at the MaxFit Games,” Grubel said. “It’s a great opportunity to challenge your overall fitness, not only one aspect of it. The events are different every year and that makes it challenging and fun. There were 16 clients and trainers from Revive at the games this year. True team spirit.”
Not to be outdone, father and son duo Jeff and Zach Hawk brought home the win for the all male team division with Zach completing 85 squats for the number one spot in the men's division. Jeff referred his son to train with Maxwell 20 years after he had trained at the facility himself. Zach lost 50 pounds with Maxwell and now his dad has also returned to train with Maxwell.
Over the years, Maxwell has used the games as a vehicle to support causes that mean something to him. Two years ago, his close friend Mick Mitchell died in a motorcycle accident. Maxwell used the games to raise money the family could use toward any related expenses. The $500 raised from this year’s games were donated to the Michael-Gene Kids Basketball Foundation. The foundation was started after Michael-Gene Robert Futch died in a car accident just before his 20th birthday. He was passionate about basketball and, at the time of his death, was an organ donor. The family’s goal is to support basketball leagues while advocating for organ donation in the name of their son.
Maxwell’s next MaxFit Games will be in memory of his mother who taught him about staying in shape and that seniors rule.
“Next good cause will be Smyrna West because they helped me tremendously with my mom her last two years,” Maxwell said. “I want to help seniors have a better quality of life.”
