Mainland High School boys basketball team hosted the Chick-fil-A Classic tournament Dec. 28-30 for 16 central Florida high school teams. Each team had the chance to play three games during the three day tournament. The Buccaneers lost their first game to Dr. Phillips High School Panthers, a division 8A school located in Orlando. Final score was 62-44.
On Dec. 29, the Buccaneers' next opponent was Santa Fe Catholic Hawks. Santa Fe led the game in the first quarter 14-8. Mainland outscored Santa Fe in the second and fourth quarters but could not overcome the point advantage the Hawks achieved in the first quarter. Nigle Cook was the top scorer for the Buccaneers with 12 points, followed closely by Jalen Willis’ 11. Mainland played tough the fourth quarter but fell to Santa Fe by 1 point. Bucs lost to the Hawks 50-49.
Last day of play brought redemption for Mainland Buccaneers with a win against the Oviedo Lions. Mainland High School wrapped up the tournament on Dec. 30 with a final score of 57-46 over Oviedo High School.
Following the tournament, Mainland’s head coach Joe Giddens stated, “I thought we played hard and had a chance to win the game in the end. We will bounce back. These are good games to learn from.”
Mainland Buccaneers play a home game against Impact Christian Academy Lions of Jacksonville Jan. 9 at 4 p.m.
