Flagler County Fire Rescue, with the assistance of crews from Palm Coast and Flagler Beach, on Feb. 2 extinguished wind-driven flames at a Hammock Dunes stilt house, but not before the fire consumed the main living area. The residents, including a pet, escaped from the home before firefighters arrived.

“Flames were coming from the top balcony of the home when firefighters arrived,” Interim Fire Chief Joe King said. “(Fire Rescue) Engine 41 and Rescue 41 quickly located, confined and extinguished the wind-driven fire that consumed a main area of the occupied residence.”

A mail carrier had called 911 at 11:15 a.m. to report smoke coming from the home located at 35 Osceola Avenue. Flagler County Fire Rescue Engine 41, Rescue 41, and Battalion 92 reported to the call, as well as Palm Coast Engines 21, 22, 23, Battalion 20, and Flagler Beach Battalion 11.

The residents have family in the area, so the American Red Cross was not called.

Flagler County Fire Marshal Jerry Smith is investigating the cause of the fire.
