The Seabreeze boys tennis team won seven matches against Mainland on Thursday, April 8, bringing the Sandcrabs to 11-1 for the season. Number one player Tyler Trumble won his singles match against Nick Dejulio and his doubles match in which he was paired with Player of the Match Elliott Rosser.
Robert Holtgrewe has coached the Seabreeze tennis team for 38 years. This was his last official high school season match before he retires this year. Under Holtgrewe’s tutelage, the Sandcrabs have gone to the state championships 15 times.
“We have districts on Monday, and we will probably win that,” said Trumble. “We will go to states, for sure.”
Seabreeze’s experience as well as Mainland’s inexperience reflected in the 7-0 outcome of the match. Mainland coach Pat Monahan explained that the majority of his players had never played competitive tennis before this season. Dejulio was the only player that had played last year.
“This is a very fun bunch,” said Monahan. “Unfortunately, I only have three players coming back next year because the rest of them are seniors.”
Seabreeze Sandcrabs head to the District 4-Class 3A tournament in Gainesville on Monday and Tuesday, April 12-13.
