COVID-19 has reached the Volusia County Branch Jail, as two employees and a former inmate have tested positive for the virus, the county announced on Wednesday, June 24.

The inmate who tested positive was booked into the jail on June 18, according to a county press release. He showed no symptoms and was released about 15 hours later. He wore a mask while in the jail's receiving area and didn't come in contact with other inmates as he was transferred to a single cell, the county reported.

The employees that tested positive are a correctional officer and a civilian employee, both of which are on leave while self-quarantining.

The jail was notified of the positive cases on Tuesday, June 23, the press release states, which prompted the facility to go into lockdown to prevent spreading the virus. The jail is also working with the Department of health to identify if anyone else at the jail came into close contact with the people who tested positive. Cleaning and disinfecting procedures have also been enhanced.

The inmate population as of Wednesday, June 24, was 1,274.
