Tomoka State Corrections Officer Anthony Checchi, of Daytona Beach, was arrested, released, then re-arrested this week, on charges saying that he sexually abused a juvenile female in 2014 in Flagler County.

“This was great teamwork between the Volusia County Sheriff’s detectives and our detectives to get this pervert off of the streets and behind bars before he could hurt this child again,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Not only did he take an innocent childhood away from his victim, but he tarnished the badge he used to wear. He needs to be locked up forever with the key thrown away. We hope the victim is able to recover from this abuse, and our thoughts and prayers are with her.”

The case began when the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office received information on June 4 about an alleged sex offense that occurred in Flagler County approximately five years ago. The crime was originally reported in Volusia County where the victim currently resides.

FCSO worked with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the allegation. The investigation revealed that a Daytona Beach man who works as a state correctional officer at Tomoka Correctional Institution sexually abused a juvenile female familiar to him in both counties.

On Tuesday, June 9, 35-year-old Anthony Checchi was arrested by VCSO and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail and held on a $25,000 bond.

Checchi posted bond and was released. However, Checchi violated the conditions of his release, and a judge issued an order to revoke bond. Checchi was arrested again on Thursday evening and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail.

Also on the evening of June 11, FCSO detectives received a signed warrant for the arrest of Checchi for the charges of Lewd and Lascivious Molestation on a victim less than 12 years old for the portion of the crime that occurred in Flagler County in 2014. The judge set the bond at $25,000.

VCSO served the Flagler County arrest warrant on Checchi at the Volusia County Branch Jail where he remains with no bond allowed.
